Instructions

LOST in TRANSLATION II - Click the Green Flag Use the # Translations Slider to set the # of "Whispers" You can also limit C4tran to only languages he speaks. Then type something in the Box and Click the Tick. Click the large Robot mouth to turn talking off/on. When it says so, click C4tran to restart without his Intro (NB: A null Translation will stop the process fully.) NOTE: If you've chosen via the White Globe in Editor Mode, to change the Base Language from English to another (eg, your own), then if that Language is not in the list of languages the Text to Speech Extension can speak, then the "speaking" part of this project is turned off, because nothing it would otherwise speak would sound like that Language, anyway. Intended to be a simpler version of Lost in Translation - https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/414566536/ - but in the end it probably turned out to be more complex.

Description

This project exists solely thanks to the "Dads & Mums on Scratch" Studio. @kriblo was inspired by @Raven_Singularity's project "WIP: Raven's Babble Bots" - https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/413933214/, to play around with the translate extension to create, "Whispering Game" - https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/414413233/ . @colinmacc then pointed out that @gor-dee had done something similar, "Chinese Whispers" - https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/303767405/ . I loved both @kriblo's & @gor-dee's projects, but neither of them did quite what I would like to see in such a project. So I created this Project pinching the best of both their projects. Thanks guys. Firstly I got both their Language lists and formed my initial list as the Union of them both, but I did it in such a way that I could easily add other Languages later. I liked the way @kriblo's showed each Translation written in the language it was translated to, but I also liked that #gor-dee's showed the Translation back. So mine shows both. I loved that @kriblo's project allowed the From Language to be whatever Language was the user's default Language, so I grabbed that idea from him. I loved the way @gor-dee's project showed where in the World each Language was used, but what I wanted to see precluded me from using that idea. I liked that they both allowed many more Translations/Whispers in the game than I do, but in this version any more than 10 would take way too long, so I only allow a maximum of 10 Translations/Whispers. And a special thanks to @papipupepappa who showed me how to effectively make a working implementation of the non-existent "speak ... and wait", eliminating the awful fudge that I had previously. This version also attempts to speak the translation to other languages as well. But it has given me a bit of a conundrum, where it really only works properly for the 22 (2 versions of Chinese makes it seem like there's 23) languages it can actually "Speak". Not sure what to do about, maybe the Dads & Mums on Scratch will help find the best solution. I am also not sure if it works properly if the chosen base Language is not one of the 22, either. First solution I have now implemented is to turn off the "speaking" if the base Language is not one of those 22. Thanks also to constructive feedback from both @papipupepappa and @kriblo, which led to a clear indication of when one set of translations is complete, and the Mouth to enable "talking" to be turned off/on, and ultimately to the animation of the Robot talking. Oh and hopefully some of you old-school programmers out there, will appreciate the Translation Robot's name ... not C3PO ... but an old school programmer's twist on it. Please add any good/funny Translations you come up with to the Comments. Regards Greg
