Instructions

Click on the stage to generate clouds. I suggest clicking consistently with the music. See inside and play with the range of random numbers to make different shapes. This project runs faster in Turbo Mode: hold the shift key on the keyboard and (while holding) click on the green flag. Then click the green flag again without holding shift.

Description

This afternoon I felt exhausted and I really needed to unwind, so I started listening to Ludovico Einaudi, in particular this song: "Nuvole Bianche", which means "White Clouds". Another of my favorite ways to relax is by making Scratch projects, so I thought that making a project to draw random clouds what exactly what I needed! I didn't know how to draw clouds. I wanted to make them more realistic than the classic cartoon, and I knew there was a lot of space for randomness in the project. So I googled "how to draw a cloud" and I found two amazing advices: 1. The trick to a more natural shape is to be consistently inconsistent. Make your cloud shapes and bumps irregular. 2. The best way to learn how to draw cloud shapes is to study the real thing. Instead of sitting indoors making up clouds, go outside and see what real clouds are doing. So I went outside and looked at clouds. In different parts of the sky there were different types of clouds: some more nice and fluffy, others were very stretched and light, other parts of the sky were almost uniformly gray. In the same way different clouds were in the same sky at the same time, I felt different moods were in myself at the same time... anyways! I made a couple of pictures and imported into Scratch and spent a lot of time cutting them. I also realized the the border of a cloud is rarely well defined and often merges or overlaps with others. For a certain time I thought I would make the pictures of the clouds move randomly on the screen but it didn't feel right. Plus, I thought the challenge of generating the clouds was a fun one. So I went back to drawing clouds with Scratch. My first approach was to use the pen. I got the idea of making lines that started from the same point and going around radially, but they looked more like stars or snowflakes. Then I decided to use stamp, and I gradually added elements of randomness and playing with parameters: dimension, shape, brightness, number and size of steps, etc. I invite people to play with them, it was very fun to tinker and hard to choose a final range for each parameter. If I had more time I'd think of ways to avoid the Turbo Mode (it takes forever to draw each of them in normal mode) and I'd think of ways to move them (right now it's impossible because they are stamped on the stage). Edit: after my friend @brapacc commented on clouds being not static and her enjoying seeing them forming, I removed the requirement of turbo mode, making it optional. I realized I also like to wait, I just needed to be reminded of that! :) Thank you Beatrice! I left the pictures of the actual clouds in the project because I wanted to keep track of my process and my inspiration, even though I'm not using them. The background color is from the picture of the sky I've taken. The music is Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi.
