Turn up the sound. Click the green flag. Turn on the radio to find out what's broadcasting...
NOTES I wasn't sure where to start with today's prompt, so I started very literally: create a broadcast with the broadcast blocks. But what sort of broadcast? At first, I thought about having a radio station with news blurbs about the pandemic, but I decided that I would find that too depressing. So then I tried to think about what some of my favorite broadcasts currently are. Opera? NPR's "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!"? Those didn't feel right either. Inspired by @mrreuland's "Trying to Catch All the Rain" (https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/410151450), I thought about broadcasts that were important or interesting to me earlier in my life. That brought me to the Conet Project, which I encountered in college. Here's a description of the Conet Project and Numbers Stations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conet_Project I find the recordings so strange and creepy and mysterious; they linger with me in such an unsettling way. I decided to create a benign-looking (even possibly sweet-looking?) radio as the venue for broadcasting these audio mysteries. To enhance the feeling of mystery, I decided to give user interface clues rather than explicit instruction for using the radio (i.e., blinking red light to turn off/on; blinking white light to change the station). I hope that this design decision supported more whimsical exploration than frustration—but please let me know!
