CHAPTER ONE: DISCOVERY OF DRAGONS Victoria sat at her desk in her small, seventh-story apartment, doodling pointlessly on her biology homework. “Gennie?” her mom called from the kitchen. “What was it you wanted for dinner again?” “Mom, I told you to stop calling me by my first name,” Victoria groaned. “And it was tacos, Mom.” Her mother poked her head into the living room where Victoria was, her auburn hair tied up in a messy bun behind her green bandana. “I named you Genevieve Victoria Swanson for a reason, young lady,” she scolded, green eyes narrowing. “I don’t like you going by your middle name.” “But I do,” Victoria argued, her own vivid green eyes sparking with annoyance. “I want to be called Victoria. It sounds cooler.” Victoria’s mom sighed. “Teens and their need for ‘coolness’,” she muttered, and went back into the kitchen. Victoria went back to doing her homework. Twenty minutes later, her mom brought out two delicious-smelling plates. “Dinnertime!” “Perfect!” Victoria exclaimed, leaping to her feet. “I just finished, anyway.” Her mother hummed and set the plates on the coffee table in the living room. “We’ll eat here today.” Victoria walked over and sat on the black leather couch. “Great!” She picked up her plate and breathed in through her nose. “Mmm,” she murmured. “Smells amazing, Mom.” Her mother picked up her own plate. “I know.” They ate in blissful silence. Victoria finished and threw away her plate. “I’m going on the roof, K?” Her mother waved her off. “Go ahead. I’ll find something to do.” Victoria smiled and exited out the front door. She quickly climbed the stairs and exited on the roof, just above the tenth floor. She breathed in the cool night air and looked up at the stars. She walked over to the edge and sat down, dangling her legs. She knew her mom would freak if she saw her sitting like this, but she did it anyway. New York City looks beautiful at night, she thought, swinging her legs and gazing out over the buildings and the lights coming from inside them. She couldn’t help but feel small and insignificant compared to the majestic mass of where she lived. “No doubt about that,” someone said behind her. She yelped, whipping around. Two people stood behind her. The first one, the one who spoke, had shoulder-length black hair, dark skin, and deep brown eyes. She wore a black jacket over a pink shirt, and acid-washed denim jeans. Her sandals were made of a strange material that Victoria had never seen before. She had a bright smile on her face, and a pink hair clip pinning her hair back. The second person was taller than the first. His skin was a bit paler than the girl’s, and his hair was brown and unruly. His face was set in a grimace. His light brown eyes, flecked with moss-green, were stone cold and serious, and there was something... dark behind them. “W-Who are you?” she stammered, standing up to face them, brushing her fire-red hair out of her eyes. The girl spoke first. “We’ve finally found you, after seven years,” she breathed. “Took us long enough,” the boy said, crossing his arms. “You’ve been quite tricky to track.” “What do you mean?” she asked. “Why have you been looking for me?” The girl smiled. “You’re the Missing Lau’ra, the one that the headmaster’s radar didn’t see. You were supposed to come with us when you were ten years old.” “I’m confused...” The boy rolled his eyes. “Just come with us. I’m Steve, and she’s Sarah.” The girl nodded. “Yup. Just come with us to Dragonhaven, and everything will be explained.” Victoria stepped back. “But... wait... I don’t even know you! Why should I trust you? And if I did, if I came with you, what about my mom? Or my friends? Or anything in my life?” “It’ll be okay,” Sarah soothed, coming forward. “Just trust us.” Victoria stepped back again. But there was not anything to step back onto. She fell off the roof of the apartment building. “No!” Sarah and Steve shouted. Sarah leapt off the building after Victoria. Victoria was screaming. Air streamed past her as she plummeted towards the ground. This is the end, she thought, squeezing her eyes shut. Suddenly, she hit a hard surface. She tentatively opened her eyes and saw azure scales. She sat up and realized that she was on the back of a large, blue dragon! The dragon’s head swiveled around back to her. “Are you okay?” the voice of Sarah asked. Victoria’s hand shot to her mouth. It was Sarah! “I-I think so,” she stuttered, lowering her hand. “H-How are you a d-dragon?”
Scroll down. Sarah snorted. “It’s what a lau’ra is, silly! We have to get you to Dragonhelm so you can be Unlocked.” Victoria looked confused as the azure-scaled dragon soared back up to the roof, landing softly on navy claws and setting Victoria down gently. There was a flash of blue light, and Sarah was standing there again, smiling. “Cool, isn’t it?” “Of course it’s cool,” Steve muttered. “Can we quit with the theatrics and bring her already? We weren’t sent to chat.” “I know,” Sarah snarled back. Steve mirrored her. It looked like they were going for one another’s throats. Then Sarah backed away, sighing. Steve looked smug, as if he’d won something or done something better. “You have to come with us,” Sarah pleaded to Victoria, her brown eyes desperate. “If you don’t, your family could be in danger.” Danger? Victoria thought, bewildered. “We-” “Way to put it nicely, Sarah. You stole my line,” Steve grumbled. He grabbed Victoria’s arm. “Look kid, you’re coming with us whether you like it or not.” Sarah’s eyes narrowed. “I was going to say that I will,” Victoria snapped, wrenching out of his grip. “You don’t need to drag me.” Sarah’s face lit up. “Good! We’ll fly you there.” There was another flash of blue light, and the azure dragon stood there once again. Victoria got a better look at it now that it was in the light of the roof; She seemed about 10-12 feet tall, with gracefully curving navy-blue horns and claws. Her azure scales shimmered like a polished sapphire, and her eyes were a bright sky blue. She had a long ridge of navy spikes going down her back, and there was an ocean-colored membrane connecting them. She saw it between Sarah’s claws, too. Sarah noticed Victoria’s amazement, and fanned her wings proudly. The membrane was the same color as the membrane between her ridges. “Woah...” Victoria whispered in awe. Steve snorted. “Watch me instead.” There was then a flash of green light, and another dragon stood before Victoria. This one was about 2 feet taller than Sarah; he had deep grass-green scales and twisting near-black bark-colored horns and claws. His ridge had no membrane between it, and neither did his claws. Each spike looked like a razor-sharp pine needle, with the same coloring. Steve fanned his own wings majestically. The membrane was the color of fresh leaves. The green dragon puffed out his chest proudly. The blue one rolled her eyes. “Which one of you do I ride on...?” Victoria asked cautiously. “I’d prefer you ride on me,” Sarah said, shooting a glare at Steve. “He tends to go a bit crazy when flying.” “Do not!” Steve argued, but blinked at Victoria. “You should ride with her though.” Victoria nodded and breathed in shakily. This moment would change her life forever. “Okay,” she said, and walked over to Sarah. “Let’s do this.” Sarah crouched down to allow Victoria onto her back. Victoria stepped up and found that there was a spot above Sarah’s shoulders where the spikes no membrane in between them. She settled there, gripping the spike in front of her tightly. “Ready?” Sarah asked. Victoria nodded. “Then let’s go!” she roared, and leapt off the building, Steve right behind her. This time, Victoria enjoyed the exhilaration of the dragons’ flight. She whooped in delight but kept her hands firmly around the spike. The two dragons spiraled up into the air, above the clouds. Victoria started coughing. She couldn’t get enough air. She leaned forward a bit, resting on the spike. “Sarah?” she rasped. “I can’t... I can’t breathe...” Sarah looked back. When she saw Victoria’s weakened state, her eyes sparked in alarm. She dipped lower in the sky to allow Victoria to breathe better. The air whooshed into Victoria’s lungs. “Thanks,” she told Sarah, still breathless. Sarah winked, and suddenly her and Steve dived down. There was a squeezing sensation, and Victoria found herself in a completely different location. Steve turned his head to face Victoria. “Welcome to Dragonhaven.”
