Dragons of Pomona is a new series I'm going to be working on. There will be four projects total, each an overview of one of the four tribes of dragons that share the continent the QuillWings inhabit. All of these species are open, meaning you can create your own if you feel inspired! Suggestions are always welcome. Basic Information: - TideWings are wyverns, and lack front legs. - Their habitat consists of bays, oceans, rivers, lakes, and any other body of water throughout the continent. They're able to survive in saltwater and freshwater. - They usually speak with whistling and clicking sounds similar to dolphin noises, using this form of echolocation as an underwater language. They speak Dragon when talking to other tribes or when above water, as it's their native tongue. - They can leap out of the water and glide short distances, similar to the abilities of a flying fish, but can't fly long distances, as their wings are built for swimming rather than flight. - They can create waves with their large wings, useful in rare combat with other tribes and while hunting. - They can breathe underwater through gills, and can't survive on land for more than a few minutes (a "fish out of water" type situation) - Their diets consist mainly of various fish, krill, and other small sea animals, with the occasional shark or dolphin depending on their hunger level. - A journey occurs every six years, where TideWings migrate from the ocean to smaller rivers to interact with others living in different areas and breed. This behavior is similar to the journey salmon make. - Long tendrils on the top of the snout are used to help the dragon sense their environment in darker or murky waters (I forgot to draw them :/) - They have webbed talons, which is beneficial to their swimming ability. - They have thin, wavy fins on their spines, chests, and tails, used for balance while swimming as well as beauty purposes. - Their wings are used for gliding through the water, and the tail fins are used for steering and changing direction quickly. - Their eggs are similar in appearance to fish eggs, spherical and slightly transparent, although significantly bigger. - Much unlike fish, TideWings lay eggs in clutches of 1-4, rather than over 100,000. - A bit like a shark, a TideWing can sense the levels of electricity emitted from other animals, useful while hunting. -They have a thin layer of fat under their scales which streamlines the body, insulates them in cold water, and keeps them buoyant. - They're known for their excellent swimming abilities compared to other tribes. - TideWings live in underwater caves, excluding royalty, who live in a palace located in a large bay. - The members of the royal family are respected equally (ex: the queen and king have the same amount of power), and adorn themselves with pearls and other jewelry. - The naming process fits an underwater theme (ex: Betta, Moray, Current, Salmon) - They're more comfortable around their own tribe, but will interact peacefully with other tribes if approached. - Newborn TideWings fit into the palm of a hand, while adults tower about 20-30 feet over the average human. - TideWings from different areas of the continent have distinctive accents. - A few bottom teeth slightly stick out of the mouth. - They have sharp senses and very advanced coordination while swimming. - They willingly share their territory with other tribes (as the continent lives in peace), but become a bit defensive if other dragons intrude on their homes deep underwater. - They are the largest tribe on the continent, but have the second lowest population. Questions? Feel free to ask in the comments! This is an open species! You don't need permission to make your own, but remix this project if you do. Art and species belong to me, @SunstripeDraws Wings of Fire belongs to Tui T. Sutherland
