This is a project in support of the movement for Black lives, to end racism and violence against Black Americans. As a white person, when I support movements for racial justice for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian Americans, it's important that I also think about what it means to be white in America. Racism isn't just about being mean to each other; it's also about systems that benefit white people like me and harm Black people and other people of color. This needs to end. Learning about white privilege is one step towards dismantling it. Instructions in project.
Many thanks to Peggy McIntosh for the backpack metaphor. If you'd like to learn more about white privilege, I'd recommend reading her essay "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," which you can find here: https://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/mcintosh.pdf The song is "Moonglow" by Podington Bear.
