She didn't want to have a boyfriend either. Kate lived for one thing: Thrill. For what good is life if you didn't live on the edge? What good is a safe, predictable life, shaded from all harm? No good. Kate lived on the streets, in the shady areas of the city. She didn't really mind. Without a real home of her own, she didn't have a choice anyway. Sometimes she bunked at her friend's house, but usually on the ground, in back alleys and side streets. Growing up with no immediate family, Kate had a hard life as a kid. She didn't remember much- she didn't care to- but she did remember one thing showing up in lots of her memories of the past: a large red skateboard. ... ___ Macaw: Macaw LOVED birds. He loved their colors and beaks, their flapping wings and lovely mating dances, their sweet chirps and caring mothers. He loved them so much and always wanted a little birdy of his very own, one to feed and pet and share secrets with, like a small friend he can trust with anything. One day, he got one. The bird was a canary, bright yellow. Macaw named him Buddy. He cared for his Buddy with all his heart. He gave him extra treats and took him outside for short 'flies' in the neighborhood. They would race up and down in the air, and Macaw loved seeing his Buddy so free and happy. He never let Buddy out of his sight. Once on these trips, Macaw got distracted by other birds flying near him and his Buddy. He went to tell Buddy to look at the other birds, but when he turned back at him, Buddy had flown. He had flown away. From the person who loved him more than himself. He was gone.
