Description

[ notes ] As part of my 200+ special, I decided to make an art process for you guys! This is how I do my art, not a tutorial, so please don't heavily reference my art style. You can follow along with this if you'd like! I use IbisPaintX, a free downloadable app. The Scratch editor will not have all the things Ibis does, so if you draw in the editor, this isn't going to work for you. If you'd like to see a speed paint of this, press A! [ slides ] 1. Do a very simple sketch in red, just marking where you want everything placed. (6.0 pen size) 2. Turn down the opacity of the sketch to 50%. 3. On a new layer, do a sketch for the lineart in blue. (6.0 pen size) 4. Turn down the opacity of the sketch to 50%. 5. On a new layer, do your lineart. (6.0 pen size) 6. Hide the 2 sketch layers. 7. Pull in a reference. For this drawing, I will be doing Kaaru, my Japan-themed OC (design by @circus-core). On a layer under the lineart, fill in your base color. 8. Set the color layer to alpha lock and do the rest of the details. 9. Fill in the eye and inner ear on a new layer. 10. Fill in the base color on a new layer (I have to do this because of the mask; skip this and the next step if your character does not have an accessory). 11. Alpha lock the layer and do the details. 12. Merge the hidden sketch layers together and the eye/inner ear layer onto the fur layer. 13. Make a new layer and clip it to the fur layer. On your reference layer, draw a little sun so you know where your light source is. Block in your basic shading. 14. Blur out the edges of the shading (I usually use the highest size, 260.0, so the shading looks more realistic). 15. Set your blending mode for the shading (I usually set it to Multiply at 25% opacity). 16. On a new clipped layer, block in your lighting. 17. Blur out the lighting. 18. Set your blending mode. Normally, I would use Add or Lighten at 25%, but in this case, I had to use Normal at 25% because the other blending modes made the lighting white. 19. Clip a layer to your accessory and block in shading. 20. Blur the shading. 21. Set your shading blending mode and clip a new layer for the lighting. Block in your lighting. 22. Blur the lighting and set your blending modes. 23. Merge the shading/lighting layers onto their parent layers. !! MAKE SURE YOU MERGE THE BOTTOM CLIPPING LAYER DOWN FIRST OR THE UPPER LAYER'S BLENDING MODE WILL CHANGE !! 24. Delete the reference layer and sketch layer. 25. (Optional) Set your lineart layer to alpha lock and color the lineart. 26. Merge the color layers together. 27. (Optional) Go to filters and select "Outer Stroke" and set the stroke to white. 28. (Optional) Duplicate the color layer and move it to the side so you can see a small part of it. 29. Filter the layer so the color is black. 30. Lower the layer opacity. 31. Make a new layer and watermark it. Merge all the layers together. 32. Finished piece.
