Instructions

========================================= READ BEFORE USE: CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFO ========================================= The audible alarm isn't Ufton's 2005 alarm but I've edited another to get it as close as I can. The only time you ever hear it in a video is a few seconds near the end of the documentary "Blood on the Tracks", but it is impossible to record as Graham Smith talks over it :/ The slow barrier in front is very deliberate; I paid a lot of attention to make it as realistic as possible. The A4-side barrier was always slow until 2009-10. They were synced 2011-onwards. This is very similar to my other 'ultimate realism' project, Ufton Level Crossing (2014). This crossing, like all of my other projects, activates from a timetable that mimics the real-life times (Or what would have been this crossing, but it is no longer around, read 'Notes and Credits' below to know why, if you don't already know). Tired of waiting? Want to make some trains run for yourself? Go into the code, click on the blank sprite called 'Testing Blocks' and follow the instructions displayed by comments. Why does this project work in reverse? The other project, Ufton2014, is facing the A4 on the swing bridge side. This project, in contrast, is facing the swing bridge (just around the corner in the distance) on the A4 side. That means the trains pass in the opposite direction. Now you can click that flag and watch some trains (Or, indeed, make some run)!

Description

Link to my other 'Ultimate Realism' Ufton Project: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/389342737/ The photo came from the very detailed formal inquiry of the crash by the RSSB. Link here: https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/RSSB_Ufton001.pdf Background Information (If needed): Ufton Level Crossing (Also known as Ufton Nervet Level Crossing) was located on Ufton Lane, a remote minor road connecting the West Berkshire village of Ufton Nervet with the A4. Originally, the crossing had traditional wooden gates hand-operated by the signaller, based in Ufton Crossing Signal Box. In September 1977, it was converted to Automatic Half Barriers and the old box was demolished. The crossing became infamous when on November 6, 2004, Reading man Brian Drysdale took his life here by parking his Mazda 323 on the crossing in the path of an InterCity 125 (using the power cars 43019 and 43029), carrying about 300 passengers. The impact derailed the front power car's leading wheelset. However, the train soon hit a point system at Towney, shortly in the Newbury direction (to the left in this photo), which caused a catastrophic derailment. Seven people died in the crash, who I will give a tribute to later on in this description. However, the crossing appeared on the news again 5 years later, in 2009, when a pedestrian jumped out in front of a train. The same happened again in 2010. In 2011, when the crossing was being locally controlled by an attendant, an error in the communication failed to alert the attendant to lower the barriers and there was a near-miss between a Class 166 and a car. In 2012, a High-Speed Train hit a moped-type scooter on the crossing, which also injured the train driver. In 2014, ten years on from the initial crash, another pedestrian was hit by a train. All of the further fatalities except the 2012 collision were ruled as sewaside (I DO know how to spell it; Scratch didn't allow me to use the word in my description) verdicts, which was decided to be an open verdict. Ever since the crash in 2004, people were asking for a rail bridge to be built at the crossing. In 2015, preparatory operations took place. The halogen road-traffic lights were upgraded to brighter and more reliable LED versions in either late 2015 or early 2016. Construction started on the bridge in April 2016, and was finished in December 2016. Shortly after, the equipment you see before you was removed. In memory of: 2004 Crash: Stanley Martin, 54, from Torquay, Anjanette Rossi, 38, from Speen, Louella Main, 9, from Speen, Leslie (Charlie) Matthews, 72, from Warminster, Barry Stevens, 55, from Wells, Emily Webster, 14, from Doccombe, Brian Drysdale, 48, from Newtown, Reading. 2009: Thomas Porter, 67, from Reading. 2010: Kenneth Greenway, 49, from Fareham. 2012: David Montague, unknown age, from Woodley. 2014: Gary Provins, 60, from Calcot. All of whom have died at the level crossing.
