Writing Excerpt: "Ode to home" My dad, my brother and I, Alone together in the middle of nowhere but still within walking distance to town. The creek and the setting sunshine sparkles where they meet. The gurgling sound of a little waterfall washes away my worries. Yet we stand firmly on the arched bridge with its white paint peeling away. We drop things into the flowing water to watch them float under the bridge, Then away down the waterfall. We toss anything from pinecones to sticks to leaves to bamboo. We race our make believe boats, forgetting about time, Except for my dad. He had a watch. We trek up the hill to the expansive field And explore inside the grove of evergreen trees. As we duck under the exit of the fortress of spruce branches, My dad spots a surprise in the distance: the house my parents just bought. My brother and I had visited it once but from this perspective from across a golden field, it felt new. As the sun sets behind our new home, Millions of fireflies welcome us by glittering and lighting up the field with wonder and awe, hope and confidence. That late summer day, my life was more simple and sheltered. This park was a grand adventure that became so very familiar. Hopefully California will start feeling that way too. One and a half years ago we embarked on an adventure And so far, I have only gotten to the creek but this time I can’t find the bridge.
