hello friends! this is last week's art project for my art class :D we were studying balance. i thought i'd pass forward what i learned here! people instinctively want to see balanced images. if an image is unbalanced, it looks off and wrong. (you can use this knowledge to make offbalance images in order to be purposely unsettling if you want to! however, more often than not you'll want to make your images balanced). certain kinds of objects have more weight then others. for example, a big shape has more weight than a small one. however, a textured shape has more weight than a flat shape. so you can make a balanced image by having a big blank circle next to a small circle with texture. this can also apply to more detailed images as well. lighter objects have less weight than darker ones. all of these things can be taken into consideration when designing your artwork! but you don't need to overthink it too much- often you will instinctively make a piece balanced. there are different kinds of balanced pieces as well. this is where my art pieces will come in! press space/arrow keys to advance through each one. note: my assignment was to make four images using black illustration markers that demonstrated each type of balance with a central theme. i chose flowers for my theme :) 1. this is an example of symmetrical balance. this means that all of the elements are mirrored on each side (even if it's not perfectly symmetrical). 2. asymmetrical balance is shown here. this is when elements are not mirrored, but they are balanced. consider that i used a big black shape for the girl, and then also made the rose big, but lighter- however, i added texture to the leaves and the rose is much more detailed than the girl, balancing out the weight. 3. radial balance is when all elements emerge from one central point. this creates an interesting and balanced composition that leads your eye to the center and all around the elements. 4. lastly, this is my example of crystallographic balance. this is when all of the elements are given equal weight, often in a grid pattern. though elements may vary, they are each given equal importance through the composition. though these kinds of images can be confusing to look at at first, they lead the eye in an interesting way. i hope you all enjoyed this quick project on balance! ^^ i'm having a very fun time learning things in my art class :D if any of you happen to put these ideas into your own artwork, i would love to see it! don't be afraid of advertising to me, i love seeing your projects :) see you soon with the next lesson: line and shape!
