Instructions

An art process for my friend @MagikarpT. Spacebar to change slides, here we go. NOTE: Most of this drawing I did not get right on my first try, so remember its okay to erase and redraw over and over until you're satisfied. Slide 1. There's a lot going on here, so ill explain it over a few slides. Slide 2. These are the main points you will define at the beginning of your sketch. The round portion of the skull, the ribcage, and the pelvis. Slide 3. This is the line of motion. The line is optional, but it tends to help a drawing. Slide 4. This dragon is in despair. Notice a lot of downward angles. The tense muscles would be because he's frustrated. Keep the mood of your dragon in mind when planning him/her out. Eyes that represent sadness tend to close more towards the back. Slide 5. The raised foot is an object that gives the piece a little bit of motion. Do anything to show that your dragon isn't a statue. Slide 6. When drawing open mouths, follow the curve of the upper jaw as far as you need to, and then you have the angle the lower jaw would come out at. Slide 7. Lay down some colours for your dragon on a layer underneath the sketch. Lower the sketch opacity if you want. Don't go into details quite yet. Slide 8. I did this portion of the colour first. Slide 9. Then add limbs... Slide 10. Add details, but no wings just yet. Use as many layers as you need to for convenience, then merge them all except the sketch. Slide 11. Add where a wing membrane will be in a layer on top of the colour layer, and lower the opacity of the sketch layer as much as you can. Slide 12. Add a layer overtop of the wing layer, and create a clipping mask. (Or turn on clipping, it'll be different depending on your program. if you can't make a clipping mask, on the wing layer there is likely an option called protect Alpha, trigger that) The effect will be the same. When drawing in your clipping layer (or protect alpha wing layer) it won't let you draw anywhere you haven't drawn already. On this layer, add any wing membrane sparkles or patterns you want. NO SHADING YET. Slide 13. Lower the opacity of the wing layer, and merge it with the color layer. Slide 14. Make an arrow to show where the light is. Now make a clipping layer. THIS HAS TO BE SEPARATE FROM THE COLOR LAYER. In the clipping layer, chose a color that's relatively close to you dragons main colour, and then grab a rlly dark variation of that color. Color the entire dragon in that color, and lower the opacity of that dark Layer to about 80%. Slide 15. Lower the opacity of your eraser and erase the dark tone my tone. Slide 16. Use a clearing/smudging tool to smoothen the shading. Slide 17. You can airbrush-erase anything else, then lower the opacity of the shading layer. Slide 18. Fix anything you might've missed. Slide 19. I apologize!! This isn't a special effects tutorial, so I won't be explaining this in depth. But essentially, I added a dark layer above, with some splotches. I added glowy lines on him to give the piece contrast. Voila!! Here we have Ripple!
