I wrote a song with my band about the current situation with the Covoid-19 virus, It is to express what is happening, to help people process their feelings, & to encourage people to visit the CDC official info page. About this song: It was a collaborative work. We noted a "nothingness" feeling & struggled with putting that into words. Finally, I found it "time on our hands, with nothing to do, sitting here, just thinking of you." Our minds are the only things that are free. Mine has been going to those I love over the last 2 weeks we've been in isolation. I chose the rainstorm as the metaphor for the coronavirus because like this virus, a storm is a human problem -- scriptures say it rains on the just & the unjust. Storms don't respect borders. They don't discriminate on the basis of race, social status, religion or gender. Lightening, deadly in a spring storm, aptly represents the mortality we are facing with the pandemic. The dimming of light is apparent throughout the piece as it progresses, indicative of the spread of the virus & the danger it presents if left to burn itself out, which cripples communities, cities, & economies. The virus inspires fear & sickness as it moves. Yet, there is always hope. The warning offered reinforces this: "You hid your smile when the rain started falling. Can't see your face, but I hear your voice calling. You say "Tell everyone now, send out this warning: Open your floodgates! Reach across the waters. Share love, not hate. The rain falls on all colors." I used percussion for the backdrop with ambient sounds of rain, thunder & windshield wipers whipping on the car because these are "instruments" you find in every culture. Music is, I feel, universal across cultures. I hope that the song offers some comfort & perhaps gives voice, to everyone, regardless of where they are or what country in which they reside. COVID-19 is not a "me or you" problem - it's not even an "us or them" problem. It's a human problem, so we all have to work together to find the solution.
