Chapter 1 Fawnkit woke up to something moving around beside him. He opened his eyes groggily to see his sister, Mousekit, squirming next to him. “Mousekit,” murmured Fawnkit, “stop squirming, I’m trying to sleep.” “But mom said she would take us outside today!” squealed the fluffy brown kit, her emerald eyes shining. Fawnkit sat bolt upright. “Outside the nursery? Awesome! I can’t wait!” “Neither can I!” added Dovekit. Milkyfur stirred. All the noise seemed to have roused her. “Good morning, kits…” she yawned. Just then, Wolfpaw padded in through the brambly entrance of the nursery, carrying with her some herbs. “Good morning, Wolfpaw,” greeted Milkyfur. “What are those leaves for?” wondered Fawnkit, padding up to her on his skinny legs. “They’re burnet. I’m giving some to Acornshade to build up her strength,” replied Wolfpaw, flicking her tail to the brown tabby queen in the corner of the nursery. “Why do you need to build up her strength?” Fawnkit asked in response, head cocked to one side. “She’s expecting kits soon, so she’ll need strength,” explained Wolfpaw, then hastily added, “and then you’ll have some friends to play with.” Fawnkit opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say anything, Dovekit jumped on top of him. “Yay! New friends!” she squeaked. “Ow! Get off me!” “Kits, settle down. Yes, I will take you outside today,” Milkyfur assured them. “Come on, follow me. And stay near me!” Stumbling over one another, they followed their mother out of the nursery. Emerging into the camp, they looked around, trying to take everything in at once. “Woah, it’s so big,” Fawnkit breathed, then noticed the grass crunching under his paws when he moved. “Why’s the grass cold and crunchy?” he asked. “Oh, that’s frost. It’ll go away once the sun comes out,” Milkyfur explained. Looking back to the other kits, she noticed something. “Dovekit’s gone! Has anyone seen Dovekit?!” she exclaimed, eyes wide with fear. “Is this the kit you were looking for? She was trying to leave the camp,” asked a gray furred she-cat, her voice muffled by a protesting Dovekit being held by her scruff. “Oh! Yes, thank you Lilacfur,” she responded, then turned around to Dovekit, sighing. “Dovekit, I said not to wander off!” “But you said we could explore the camp….” she objected, but realized her mistake. “Ooh, that wasn’t part of camp, was it?” “You’re right, it wasn’t. Now please, Dovekit, don’t wander away again,” chided Milkyfur. Dovekit murmured her agreement, her ears back in embarrassment. “Now, you two can go explore the camp, just stay where I can see you. Dovekit, you stay near me. Mousekit! Stop that at once!” The small brown she-kit stopped pouncing at Lilacfur’s tail and backed away to do something else. Meanwhile, Fawnkit looked around the camp. Stone walls sloped down into the bottom, and a large tree came up from one side. Behind it, there was a hole in the rock, where a light she-cat was sitting and watching the camp. All of a sudden, stuff started falling out of the sky. It was small, soft looking, and fluttered down to the ground. One fell on Fawnkit’s nose. He shivered. It was cold. Mousekit and Dovekit also seemed to notice, because they were trying to bat it out of the air. “What’s this cold white stuff?” Mousekit wondered, catching one in her paw only to see that it disappeared when she touched it. The flakes fell on her dark fluffy fur, adding spots of white. “That’s snow. It comes from the sky in leaf-bare, and melts when newleaf comes,” Milkyfur explained, cream tail twitching with amusement. Just then, some cats came down into the camp from a less steep part of the wall. Most left for other places in the camp, but two went over to the den behind the tree and began to talk to the cat there. “That would be the noon patrol. Okay, kits, that’s enough time outside for one day, come on!” Disappointed, the kits went back into the nursery. Not long after, Mousekit leaped on top of Dovekit, yelling, “I’ll be the strongest warrior ever!” Now excited, Dovekit shoved her off and tackled her, pinning her down by lying on her. “No, I will!” she squeaked playfully. “Settle down. Now is not the time for fighting.” Milkyfur murmured, looking tiredly at them. Fawnkit nodded, and curled up near her and fell fast asleep.
