The wind howled through the trees. Shadething peeked from the safety of the water, her head emerging from its inky depths. Mist covered the forest floor like a blanket. A raven cried out overhead. Strange sounds rang ominously in the distance. Shadething remembered back to when she was still a young kit. Hunters came to the The Gnarl, the forest she lived in. She had gotten out of camp and hidden, but her mother and sister didn't. A hunter found them. A shrill scream. The tang of blood and fear on the air. And then silence. They were dead. Her name wasn't even Shadething. Her name had been Shade, and her sister's Smoke. After the hunters killed them, she wandered the woods alone, and every new moon, the night the hunters came, she'd cry. Locals of the village outside the woods heard her mournful cries. They came up with names for her. The Awful Hybrid. The Black Mist Monster. The Filthy Hunter. The Dead Shrieker. Thing From The Gnarl. Walking Moss Beast. She hated the names, but had to live with them, adopting the title of Shadething. And ever since, she's stalked the woods, turning the hunters into the hunted.
