The Most Successful Pirate in History When you think of pirates, what comes to mind? Most likely, you picture a European man wearing a black hat and a wooden leg. You might be surprised to hear that Madame Zheng was a female pirate who traveled the South China Sea and was much more successful than any pirate that comes to mind. Madame Zheng lived in modern-day Guangzhou before marrying her first husband and becoming a pirate. After the death of her husband, she became a pirate captain 1800 boats called junks. Madame Zheng used her intelligence to seize power of the ships, win many naval battles. She retired peacefully and died at the elderly age of sixty-nine, an uncommon end for a pirate.
