Hey everyone! To celebrate me leaving Scratch after five years, I figured it's finally time to list my top ten favorite Sonic games. As always, if your favorite game didn't appear on this list, let me know your favorite games in the comments. So here are my top ten favorite Sonic games. 10. Sonic Heroes: I'm only putting this game on my list because it's my favorite "meh' Sonic game. It's not my favorite game, but I also don't love it as much as the other games on this list. I like the idea of team-based gameplay, and would love to see Sega try it again in future Sonic titles. But yeah. It's an okay game. 9. Sonic Advance series + Sonic Battle: I put both on the same spot because I like to think that they're the same series (and I can't choose which one I like better). The Sonic Advance series was Sega's first attempt at bringing modern Sonic to handheld (if you don't count Sonic Pocket Adventure), and it was a great first attempt. I love the Sonic Advance series, and again, I would love to see Sega make something like that again (not Sonic 4). I would also say that Sonic Battle is my favorite Sonic spin-off title. I love the gameplay, the story, and the music, and would probably put it as one of my top favorite Gameboy Advance games. 8. Sonic and the Black Knight: As much as people hate on this game, I actually really like Sonic and the Black Knight. I think it greatly improves on its predecessor, Sonic and the Secret Rings. The combat is a almost perfect blend of Sonic's speed and swordplay. The music is one of the best in the series. And to me, this has the best depiction of Sonic as a character. He's still edgy, arrogant, and short-tempered; but he also has a big heart, and is willing to help others in anyway possible. I love heroes like that. Is it the best game? No. Is it very underrated? Yes. 7. Sonic 3 and Knuckles: Now before Sonic Mania, this probably would've been my favorite 2D Sonic game. This game is gigantic. It adds tons of new stuff to the series. It was the first Sonic game to have a save feature, it introduced elemental shield, and of course, how could I forget knock, knock, it's Knuckles? The music I also think is the best in the classic Sonic trilogy. Mainly because it was done by Michael Jackson. So if anyone asks me what my favorite Michael Jackson song is, I won't say "Thriller" or "Smooth Criminal." I'll say Ice Cap Zone Act 1. 6. Sonic Adventure: Sega's first true introduction to putting the Blue Blur in 3D was a successful one. While it may not hold up well twenty years later, I still love Sonic Adventure. It introduce redesigns that would become a mainstay to the series. It introduced characters like Tikal, Chaos, Gamma, and of course everyone "favorite": Big... Yeah it may not be perfect, but I still love Sonic Adventure despite all it's flaws. 5. Sonic Adventure 2: How could I not put this on the list? It's considered by many to be Sonic's best outing, as well as the last good Sonic game before Mania. It also brought us two fan favorites Shadow and Rouge. And while many complain about the sections that aren't Sonic and Shadow, I like the other levels. I don't think they're great, but I still like them fine. And I could write an entire paragraph as to why I love the Chao Garden alone. To me, this will always be a great way to escape from the city. 4. Sonic Mania: If you were to tell thirteen year old me that there would be a new Classic Sonic game that was made by fans, become the highest-rated Sonic game of all time, AND bring back two forgotten characters, I would think you were crazy. Everything you have heard about this game is right. This game is incredible, and the fact that this was made entirely by fans with Sega's guidance is truly a wonder. This is the best 2D Sonic game ever, and I cannot wait to see what the team behind it makes next. 3. Sonic Unleashed: This was the first game to feature the "modern" Sonic formula. Some might see that as a bad thing, but most people see it as a great thing. And despite the public opinion, I really like the Werehog. I don't care if he's slower. Just because he's slower, doesn't mean it's not good. You still have the daytime sections that are fantastic. The music is one of my favorite in the series, and I love the relationship between Sonic and Chip. Their friendship is one of the best in the series. So yeah. Sonic Unleashed: a very good, and very underrated Sonic game. 2. Sonic Colors: This, to me, is the perfect 3D Sonic game. It basically takes the daytime section of Unleashed, improves upon it, and makes it its own game. Throw in a new powerup system in the form of Wisps (that we'll keep seeing in every Sonic game from now on whether we like it or not :/), and you've got yourself a mighty fine Sonic game with incredible gameplay, astounding music, hilarious writing, and amazing graphics for the Wii. Now for something I don't normally do: here are some honorable mentions that didn't quite make it, but I want to mention anyway...
... Honorable Mentions: -Sonic Forces: it was supposed to be Sega's biggest Sonic game, but it just came up "ok." I like the custom character creator, the music is one of the best in the series, and the graphics are really nice. But other than that, that's it. -Sonic 1: It's the game that started it all, so it would be a crime to not put it somewhere here. -Sonic 2: Because you'll kill me if I don't at least make it an honorable mention -Sonic Riders Zero Gravity: To me, this is the best (and only good) game in the Riders series. I find it to be very underrated. It's not the best game, but I still very much enjoyed it. -Sonic Rush: It's a more or less successor to the Advance series, it introduced Blaze, and it introduced boosting. I think it's very fun. -Sonic Lost World: Probably one of the most "meh" Sonic games ever next to Heroes. It's not bad, by any means, but it did give Sonic a run button. You shouldn't do that in a Sonic game. -Sonic After the Sequel: The only reason this didn't make it on the list is because it's not an official game. It's fan-made. But I still think it's a fantastic game; especially considering it's a fangame. This was made by LakeFepered, who would go on the make the Spark the Electric Jester series. I recommend playing the new DX version, which adds the Drop Dash from Mania, as well an extra special boss. 1. Sonic Generations: This is not only my favorite Sonic game of all time, but it's also my favorite game in general. This was my true introduction to Sonic. Before that, I had only known Sonic through Sonic X (which my sister would force me to watch), Super Smash Flash 2, and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. My cousin showed me this game when I came over to his house one Christmas, and I was blown away. This game looked incredible! It was fast, it had incredible music, it looked great. I had to have it. So my mom got me the 3DS version. And while I still liked it fine, it wasn't the Xbox 360 version my cousin had. Thankfully though, a few years later, I got an Xbox 360 for Christmas, and of course, Sonic Generations came along with it. This, to me, is a wonderful Sonic game. It blends 2D and 3D Sonic perfectly, it has fan favorite levels from Sonic history, which you can play as both a 2D Classic Sonic level, as well as a 3D Modern Sonic level. While it's not perfect, I still love Sonic Generations, and that is why I consider it my favorite Sonic game of all time, as well as my favorite video game of all time. So that's my top 10 favorite Sonic games. Again, if you don't agree with my list, let me know your favorite Sonic games in the comments. Thank you, and thanks again for five great years!
