The wind whipped around her. She flicked her wings, the wind trying to drag her away. She curled closer, trying to keep it warm. She closed her eyes, gripping the surface tighter. They couldn't know about it, about what she had done. They would never forgive her. North let the wind carry on around her. She tried to walk with it. The wind was too strong. She curled closer to the object. "Don't worry, my little hybrid," she whispered. "They can't- they WON'T find you." Her voice was sharp like shards of ice. She heard talon steps behind her. Whipping around, North glared at the blizzard snow. Her sharp eyes could see what looked like a shadow walking towards her. She blinked. It wasn't a shadow, was it? "Princess North!" She held onto the object even harder. The wind whipped around her. She talons and wings ached. "North! North! Where are you?!" The shadow was closer. She bristled. Even though she wasn't fit to fight she would. She couldn't let her dragonet get hurt. She blinked as a NightWing walked out of the storm. His black scales looked like a shadow. His blue eyes looked into her own. Prince Shadow? "Get away from me!" she hissed. "I don't know who Princess North is! I am North! I ran away from my home!" Shadow looked at her, his eyes filled with sorrow. "I want to run away too," he said. He glanced at the egg. "And I want to be with our dragonet." "Our dragonet!?" She hissed. "The only reason I'm running away is that they'll hate me! I'm not running away because I want to raise her together!" Shadow walked towards North and grabbed her talons. “You used your magic,” he whispered, breathless. North felt tears welling in her eyes. She let go of Shadow’s talons. “I had to.” Shadow wrapped his wings around his mate. “We’ll raise her together. Forget about the tribes.” North looked around. “We need to hide. The blizzard will only get worse.” Shadow nodded. “I saw a cave back there. We’ll hide out until the storm passes.” North picked up the egg and followed Shadow through the blizzard. They reached the cave and Shadow breathed fire on a few dead sticks. North curled up with the egg, and soon Shadow curled up around them both. “IN HERE!” North opened her eyes. She felt around. The egg! She looked around frantically. She glimpsed a grey egg, hidden in a nest of moss. She ran over to it and curled around the cold egg. Shadow ran into the cave. “They’re here! They found the cave!” North looked at the NightWing prince. “Who? NightWings or IceWings?” “IceWings! Covered in armor!” North picked up a pebble and looked at it. Her eyes narrowed. “My sister’s guards,” she said with a sigh. “Why did she send them?!” North threw the pebble across the cave. “How would I know?” “What should we do?” Shadow was pacing now, his jaw clenched. “They blocked the cave entrance.” North scoffed, holding up her talon. Shadow looked at her and sighed. “You’ll go insane, North!” North bristled. “No, I won’t!” Shadow grabbed her talon. “You endangered yourself before I found you! You were going crazy!” He sighed. “I can’t lose you again, North.” North lashed her tail. “My soul is already gone,” she said. “You’re keeping me sane. Our dragonet will keep me sane. Let me save you both.” Shadow sighed. “North, I can’t let you do this!” North glared at him. “As if you would be able to stop me! Saving your life and our dragonet’s life should be more important than ME.” “We need to be together!” “My sister won’t allow that!” Shadow looked at his talons. “I can’t lose you. We risked everything. If I lose you…” he looked up, meeting her eyes. “Then I’ll have lost everything.” North looked at the egg. “What time of day is it?” “Night. Why?”

Description

North picked up the egg and held it close to her heart. “I’ll stop them. But you have to protect her.” Shadow took the egg from North. “She can unite our tribes.” North looked at him. “What? What are you talking about?” “She can challenge both of her aunts for the throne! She could be the queen of the NightWings and IceWings!” “Shadow…” Shadow was walking around the cave, his eyes bright. He was almost shouting. “They’d be the DayWings! Or the SnowWings! The-” “Shadow!” North hissed. “She won’t be the queen! You don’t even know if it’s a male or female!” Shadow’s wings drooped. “Right.” North murmured something. Then a loud crack came from the egg. Shadow screeched and looked at North with a terrified expression. “What are you doing?!” A talon poked through the egg. Shadow took a step back. “North!” North closed her eyes. A small squeak came from the egg, then a head popped out. “She needs to come out.” “Not like this! Not here!” North opened her eyes. The dragonet was struggling to get out. She held out her talon and the dragonet popped right out, landing just before her mother. Her. North felt tears at the edge of her eyes. “She’s safe.” Shadow looked over the dragonet, who seemed to be bumbling around. “Really?” “She’ll be even safer in the Night Kingdom. With you.” “She ca- I can’t take care of a full-grown dragon, let alone a dragonet!” North looked at him, her blue eyes blazing. “You have to.” Roars sounded at the entrance to the cave and North looked up. She picked up the dragonet and shoved her into Shadow’s arms. “What should we name her?” Shadow asked nervously. North kept her eyes on the cave entrance. “Half Moon.” “H- Half Moon?” She glared at him. “Of course you moon brain!” The roars got closer. North picked up a pebble and sighed. She closed her eyes. When Shadow touches this pebble, take him and Half Moon to the Night Palace safely. She thought for a moment and added, and give Half Moon the ability to see into minds and thoughts, as well as dreams. North shivered and looked at Shadow. “I’m sorry it’s come to this,” she said sadly. Shadow blinked, but before he knew it North pressed the pebble into his talon. He looked up, mist swirling around him. “North,” he said, his voice sounding like it was miles away. “No.” Within seconds he was gone. And so was North’s soul.
