(Don't worry, touching the bosses doesn't hurt you.) Use Z to attack, and X to switch between weapons. You have a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. Checkpoints are unlocked by getting through a boss fight without taking any damage from them. YOU MUST UNLOCK CHECKPOINTS IN ORDER. (The only exception is Hctarcs Dog's checkpoint.
