10-year-old Christie skipped down the long, winding driveway, with a wide grin on her face, and a backpack slung over her shoulder. It was such a lovely morning, and Christie couldn’t wait to get started with the day. This day would be spectacular! After school, she would get ice cream, and then when she got home; she hoped to watch a movie. Later that evening, she and he parents would go to the local animal shelter, where they would adopt a dog. This would be Christie’s first real pet, besides a goldfish. Christie continued to skip along. Normally, she’d take the bus, but her school wasn’t that far from her house. It felt like a good day to walk. After she adopted the dog, she would take it over to Jaime’s house, and they would play together. Jaime was her best friend. Maybe they’d even take her dog for a walk. Christie tried her best to hold her excitement in. She couldn’t wait. When she reached the school, she threw her backpack in her locker and headed for her first class. Her first class was terribly boring. English was no fun, and the rules were so hard to remember. One word could be and adjective in one sentence, but it could be a verb in another! Christie let out a sigh of relief when the class was over. She only had two more classes until lunchtime. Christie felt like lunchtime couldn't come quickly enough. At lunch, she would be able to tell Jaime about getting a dog! The hours stretched on and on, but finally, lunchtime arrived! Christie raced down the school corridors along with all the other kids. The cafeteria was probably the biggest room in her school, and Christie loved being in that room. She went down the lunch line, and as soon as she got all of her food, she settled down at her table. It didn’t take long for Jaime to arrive. “Hi Jamie!” Christie’s face broke into another wide grin as her friend sat down across from her. Christie loved Jamie’s dark, coffee colored curls. She drifted off into a daydream, wondering what it would be like if her light flaxen hair was curly. Her gray eyes shimmered. Jamie pulled Christie out of her daydream. “Can you come over to my house and play later?” Christie nodded vigorously. “Yeah!” Jamie flashed a dimpled smile at Christie. “Great! I can’t wait!” Christie bounced in her chair. She had to tell Jamie about getting her dog—she just couldn’t hold it in any longer. She was too excited! After taking a deep breath, she let it all out, hoping that Jamie wouldn’t be jealous. Jamie couldn’t have a dog because her brother was allergic. Luckily, Jamie wasn’t jealous at all! In fact, she seemed to be more excited than Christie was, if that was even possible. The two girls discussed the subject for the rest of the lunch break, and they continued to discuss it all the way through recess. This definitely was an exciting day for the girls!
