The project only contains drawings, see Notes and Credits for comments according to image number. this is a remix of @Colors_of_the_wind's project -- go check it out first! I wanted to add onto it a little because I felt that some of the statements could use alterations / qualification. None of them are wrong, and many are helpful! I simply wanted to elaborate on the reasons why some of the advice was offered. Personally, I think that life / observational drawings are where it's at if you would like to learn how to draw convincing and lively characters. Studying anatomy is helpful in order to understand what's going on under the surface, but on its own, it tends to cause issues like stiff posing and a lack of understanding the appearance of muscles in use particularly. I also agree that no one is trying to make anyone learn how to draw realistically against their will -- if it's just for fun, then have fun any way you want! But if you are looking to develop your artistry, then it's important to study what objects and living things actually look like and move like. In order to break those rules, you have to know them.

Description

Note: Characters being used are Moza (the girl) and Sultan (the guy) from Emara: Emirates Hero lol 1. I'm sorry but I kinda had to point this out because it was kind of a strange statement! Just having ears, limbs, a nose, a face, and a personality is not enough to show that your character is human. There are a lot of other factors, such as proportions and body construction, that contribute to an identification of species. 2. Drawing some headshots as you wanted! This is what I was talking about earlier -- many realism rules are "broken" in this style of drawing (an emulation of the cartoon's style), but in a way that continues to acknowledge anatomy even as some parts are exaggerated and/or simplified. Their faces still have a solid feel to them and a sense of form. In general, eyes should be somewhere around the middle of the face but leaning towards the top slightly, and based on a spherical eyeball. The bottom of the nose is around the bottom 1/3, the ear is behind the hinge of the jaw, the mouth is around 1/2 of the way from the nose to the chin, and so on... 3. Regardless of the style and level of realism you want, learning what real proportions and geometry look like on people is still helpful! So, honestly, even if you love a very cartoony style, learning from life can take you up a level. Even famous cartoonists did lots of life drawings alongside their cartooning (take the Disney animators, for instance!). See how style A, which is more simplified, does use a lot of visual shorthands and shortcuts, but the underlying structure is still similar to style B, which is closer to semi-realism / realism. 4. This is pretty random, just a demonstration of varying proportions that still appear human. As a note, you may notice that depending on how extreme the proportions are, you will need to reduce or emphasize different body parts. Take drawing B, where the hands are larger than would normally correspond to that body in a realistic drawing in order to make it look natural with the larger head size and add expressiveness. 5. This bothered me a bit when COTW went over human anatomy referencing, esp. since she utilizes it in her own drawings but did not mention it in the tutorial! Actually, many straight lines exist when the human body is in use -- it is not all curves, and in fact using all curves makes a body look rather lumpy. Straights occur particularly in areas that are more bony or are being stretched when a bend in the body is happening. They can also occur when two softer areas press together. Curves happen in softer/fleshy areas of the body, and on the inside of a bend or fold. This drawing has a couple of examples of that; take a look and see if you think they are well-used! ok, that's it haha - hope it helped someone!
