Story: A Tiny World by the Sea Finn was just a puppy when he first met James. It was a cool winter morning and he and his litter mates were cuddled in hay next to their mother. James came into the barn with the farmer, he was tall, but very quiet and gentle near the still dreaming puppies. Finn still remembered how he looked over each of them with great care, and how he smelled of the city, a jumbled mess of people and places. But most of all Finn remembered driving home in the car seat next to James, where he talked of travelling to a tiny world near the sea. A tiny world of dainty islands and fish markets, where wives would wait for days until their husbands came home from the dangerous seas. Where children would play with their dogs on the beach as the sun set. A world where he and Finn could explore and have adventures. It was maybe two years later and Finn still woke James up every morning to get him out of bed to go on a walk, and every day for two years James would do it. But this morning was different, James was already awake and excited when Finn went into his room to wake him. There was a large suitcase on his bed and James’ clothed scattered in both folded and unfolded piles. Finn’s tail began wagging, this meant they were about to go on an adventure together. The boat was bouncy and it was hard to keep a solid footing, but eventually they made it to a small island. For days Finn and James camped, hiked, fished, chased birds (well the bird chasing was mostly Finn) and had the time of their lives on that island. But eventually, their adventures had to end, and James once again found that same sailor that had taken him. However, the boat he had with him was not the same as the one they had before. The boat was not exactly dog friendly and Finn’s gut sank to the dirt as he thought about riding it. James must have thought of this too, he walked Finn up to a little house on the island with a woman outside. The sailor gave the woman a sweet kiss and pointed to the boat and then to Finn. James handed his leash to the woman and quietly promised him he’d be back soon. Then he and the sailor walked off to the shipyard without him. The woman was sweet and gave Finn lots of treats, her belly was big and he could hear kicking inside. She and Finn waited a bit at the house and then went to a rocky beach to watch the boat leave. The smell of rain filled Finn’s lungs and cold wind bit his fur. The huddled closer together. Clouds flooded in from all sides and the woman stood up to use her phone. Waves thrashed in the distance and fog covered the sea. He didn’t know if it was the wind, but a chill went through his body as the woman was silent with the phone to her ear. Each of them waiting, as neither of them wanted to leave their tiny world by the sea.
