... Have you ever been to the rose field? That's where I found her. She was lying on her side in a box, rose stems wrapped tightly around her neck. She was dead. I was young then, not a kid, but not an adult, but in that awkward stage inbetween where you were emotional and weird and if you saw a corpse you would probably ignore it. Or, if you were me, you would start crying and drag the corpse to the Tree of Life. I don't really know why I did it. I guess I just knew that she was so /small,/ and so /young./ Who could harm a cub, let alone kill her with thorns digging into her neck? I layed her onto the biggest root and shed a single tear that splashed onto the tree. And then something happened. The tear stretched and sharpened, expanded and enlarged until standing in front of me was a fox made of water. The water spirit blinked and picked up the dead cub in her paw, and looked back down at me. "I can revive her," it said flatly. "if you do me a favor." I nodded furiously. I still didn't know what I was doing. "I'll do whatever it takes," I said, tears falling down my face. That's how I ended up in this war. "Fight," the spirit told me every day. "Fight for me, and I will revive her." So every day for two months, I shredded and clawed and bit the spirit's enemies. I hated every minute of it. Who would of guessed that the spirit haunting the Tree of Life, the same one who had revived millions, was evil? I sat on the edge of that cliff overlooking the rose field, the same one that I had found /her/ in. I turned to see the water spirit. It sat next to me. "You know, I did it so I'd have someone like you on my side." it said, smiling evilly. I tensed. "What?" "Oh, sweetie. Haven't you figured out that it was me who killed her? It's pretty obvious." I screeched with rage and turned on the ghost. I leapt into the air. My paws came down a moment too late and the water spirit dove under me, catapulting me into a rose bush. The spirit followed and put her paw on the bush. I felt the thorns slowly wrapping around my neck. "Sad," the water spirit said, smiling sadistically. "I thought you would stay longer. Oh well." I couldn't die. I had to save her. I couldn't I couldn't I couldn't. "I WILL NOT DIE!" I screamed, tearing through the thorns. "Let me help you then." She brought down her cobalt blue claws, and I heard something snap. White hot pain blinded me. Everything went blurry, and I couldn't stand on my right leg anymore. I couldn't see, couldn't hear, couldn't move. I couldn't die. I screeched, and with everything I could, I raked my claws through the water spirit's chest. And then the water spirit just kind of.. faded away. I stood, breathing heavily. I'd done it. I fell onto my side, everything turning white in my vision. When I opened my eyes again, it was morning, and a small blue cub was standing in front of me. "You're my new favorite person in the world," she said. ___________________________________________ The song is Whatever it Takes by Imagine Dragons.
