The ladder is optional, however, so if you don't want to, that's fine. Thanks. In the main menu, the "Start Game" button asks the player for their name and starts the game, the "Voice Volume" slider sets the volume of the clicking noise that plays when characters in the game talk, the "Music Volume" slider sets the volume of the music, the "Text-to-speech" checkbox toggles text-to-speech on and off, the "Show FPS?" checkbox toggles showing the frames per second on and off, and the checkbox with the picture of the Earth toggles auto-translation into whatever the player's language is on and off. (Note: The text engine of VisScratch only supports so many characters, so if you want to make a visual novel that can translate into/is in Japanese, for example, you'll have to make the hiragana, katakana, and kanji yourself, since they're not included in VisScratch's text engine.) The "Show text all at once?" checkbox toggles showing the dialogue all at once, rather than it appearing slowly, on and off.

A visual novel is an interactive text-based video game that has visuals and (usually) has a branching story. You could also call them interactive stories, I guess. Usually things are slightly animated, like a character's facial expression might change, and you can see characters slide in and out of the screen, but the rest of it, besides music and the background, is mostly text. A game engine is sort of like the software that was used to make a game. So how would you make this with Scratch? Although VisScratch isn't exactly its own software since it uses Scratch, it has a bunch of pre-made code that comes in the form of custom blocks that make making visual novels with Scratch way easier. So what is VisScratch? VisScratch is a visual novel engine for Scratch. Once you know how to use it, it's pretty easy to use.
