It’s your birthday!” Jax shouted as he shook Callista. Callista opened her eyes to find Jax’s brown eyes staring eagerly back at her. “What time is it?” she responded groggily. “It’s 10.” answered Azura, excitedly hovering over Callista “Ready for you big day?” Callista jump out of bed, “What?!” She glanced at her clock to make sure her friends were pulling a prank. After realizing the truth, she rushed into the bathroom. When she came out, her curly, ginger hair was pulled pack into messy pigtails. She was wearing a tight fitted purple dress and a set of goggles were placed crooked on her forehead. She grabbed her pair of training wings then ran into the kitchen, followed closely by her friends. She grabbed a brightly colored waffle out of her 3D food printer and stuffed it in her mouth. She rushed out the door with her cheeks still full. She hurried across the street to a bus stop. She tapped her foot anxiously and repeatedly glanced at her watch with panic in her purple eyes. Jax and Azura strolled to the bus stop after her. Once they caught up Azura assured Callista .“You’re not going to be late. Your test doesn’t start until noon.” “I know but I wanted to arrive there early so I could see the course for myself.” Callista replied as she boarded the air bus. She took a seat between Jax and Azura. She grasped the arm rests as the bus began to hover and continued to tap her foot. Jax wrapped his arm around Callista’s shoulder as clouds whipped past the window behind them. “Relax a little” Jax suggested, “I’m sure you will pass. You trained so much.” But how could she not be nervous? Callista thought. She waited for this day all her life. The day she would finally be able to fly free. All the citizens of Sky City took the flying test on their 14th birthdays. If they passed, they would be able to fly on their own. If they failed, they would have to try again on their next birthday and continue to ride the air bus or walk. Failing wasn’t just an inconvenience. It was humiliating. Everyone at school would make fun of her. The bus jolted to a stop, interrupting Callista’s thoughts. The three friends’ jaws dropped in amazement as they stepped out of the bus. They arrived at the top of the Silver Tower, the tallest building in the city. “Welcome! Are you Callista?” asked a secretary from behind marble counter. Callista stepped forward timidly and mumbled, “Yes” “Follow me.” the secretary ordered. “You got this!” “Good luck” her friends cheered then took a seat in the lobby. Callista smiled back at them and followed the secretary down a hallway. “Your appointment is right in here.” the secretary announced as the opened a door. Callista walked though and found herself on a balcony. She looked over the edge and between the clouds she could barely see the tiny city below. She took a gulp of the thin air as her legs turned to jello.
