PART 1 Glow had always thought of herself as tough, stubborn, and resilient. She knew better now. Now, she knew that she had to do what she was told. Immediately. She was in the possession of a male. It was how it worked. She worked her paws off every single day, just like the hundreds of slaves who worked alongside her, picking cotton and preparing food. Who knew that that was all about to change? Glow walked to her room from the day's work, exhausted and worried. The civil war had been going on for four years now, and she only hoped that the tom, Abraham Lincoln, who was running the country, would be able to win the war. She wanted freedom. She wanted to feel the wind in her fur, unrestricted and free. She wanted to run, far, far away, into the setting sun. It was all planned out. She had to escape. It was April 8th. She would escape the next day. And so she did. She ran away, across the hills. He would not miss her. She was only one of many. Her paws felt light, free from strain and hurt. She yowled to the setting sun and curled up in some tree roots. The next week, she knew that something had happened. Cries of jubilee filled the air and someone pulled her out of her tree roots to stand beside other black cats. There they stood, next to white cats and brown cats, and occasionally some red or yellow cats. A proclamation filled the air, and she stood in stunned silence. "And, finally, the 13th amendment; all slaves shall be freed." And then she cried joyously, standing next to the other once-slaves. They were free at last.
