Chapter Four ~ Flower woke to the sun shining into the hollow. She yawned, relieved to be out of the darkness of night. She padded out, sniffing the fresh air with delight. Then the thought struck her. /Rose! I've got to warn her!/ She started off into the forest, desperately trying to find the right path. She slowed, filled with doubt. /They wouldn't hurt Rose, would they? What would they get out of it?/ She looked into the woods. /Grief?/ Suddenly, a strange sensation flooded into her. It felt as if something were...stalking her. She curled up on the forest floor to think, but was soon taken by sleep. After she woke, the sensation had grown stronger. She peered through the ferns, surprised to see that night had fallen. She tilted her head up to check if the moon was out; it would be easier to find her way through the tangle of trees with light to lead her. But as she looked up, she saw, with a screech of horror, that the sun was still there. The darkness wasn't night. It was something else. She turned, and almost collapsed with absolute terror. The darkness was now a great wave, clawing through the forest until it was almost a fox-length in front of her. Flower bolted up, and sprinted as fast as she could into a clear expanse of grass. The dark wave was now a whisker away, and Flower was starting to weaken. She shrieked as it touched her tail tip; it felt as though it were struck by a claw that was on fire. She continued to run, but the darkness was gaining. As she emerged into woodland, a thorn-covered branch whipped her face, creating a long gash across her muzzle. Flower wanted to screech, but couldn't. She was too weak. She finally gave in, letting the darkness engulf her. Flower woke with a start. She froze, slowly taking in what had just happened. She almost exploded with relief as she realized it was all just a nightmare. Flower jumped with joy. /I'm safe!/ Suddenly, something wet dropped onto her paw. Then another. /Great. All I need is for it to start raining./ As she went to lick the droplets of water off of her paw, she realized it was not water. It was blood. She stared, with absolute horror, at her muzzle. The gash was still there.
