Flash Distillation Calculator by cheddargirl ========== This project calculates the resulting flow rates and mole fractions for an ethanol/water mixture. Calculations are based on graphical method for solving flash distillation problems (using a McCabe Thiele diagram). Drum pressure is 101.3 kPa (or 1 atm) for this project. Data for McCabe Thiele diagram is based vapor-equilibrium data for ethanol/water mixture at 101.3 kPa (1 atm); data obtained through "Separation Process Engineering, Second Edition" by Phillip C. Wankat. Kinda lost on what this project is all about? Click the button on the bottom left corner for more info, click to go through the info screen and eventually exit. (Note: the info there is very, very basic, I don't go into detail into how I did the calculations for this project since they're kinda lengthy to explain, this project is more meant to be interactive than instructive at this point). BUG: There seems to be a Flash bug where you cannot exit the info screen. If that happens, just hit the stop button and restart the project. Project otherwise works properly offline. ========== Outside of my Scratch life, I studied chemical engineering. Not surprisingly, the basics of separation process engineering was part of the curriculum. I thought it would be interesting to see if Scratch can be used to create programs for some basic engineering concepts. A Scratch project is obviously not a substitute for a high-end program like Aspen, but surprisingly, the results here are pretty close to what I get in a manual calculation.
