Dawnpaw trotted into the camp,a robin in her jaws.Almondpaw had spent so much time congratulating her on the impressive catch she hadn't been able to catch anything else. Prey had been plentiful.Almondpaw had caught two shrews and a mouse,and their mentors had caught a rabbit together. Oceanpaw padded over. "Firekit's moon of punishment is over-she's gonna be made an apprentice!" <An apprentice!>Those words sent a magical thrill through Dawnpaw.She'd nearly forgot she'd been an apprentice for a moon already! "But I don't want to move on without Firekit,"Almondpaw's anxious mew jerked her back to the present. "I want to sit my warriors vigil with her and Dawnpaw!" "She'll be in there only a moon after you,"Oceanpaw pointed out. Dawnpaw's tail swished. "But it won't be the same!" "Well,maybe you can ask Dad to put your warrior ceremony off,"her littermate suggested. "But Firekit's is starting!" Firekit's pelt seemed to glow,like the legendary cat she was named for.But her eyes glowed even brighter.Songstar apprenticed her to Bladesky. When Dawnpaw looked over,his eyes were dark as he touched noses with Firepaw.Wasn't he happy to have an apprentice? Songstar leapt down the rocks.Oceanpaw padded to the medicine den,Almondpaw to the apprentice's den,leading Firepaw. "You coming,Dawnpaw?"he called over his shoulder. "No,you go ahead,"she replied. "I'm gonna go for a walk." She trotted out of the camp,going to the river that was on the border between their territory and FangClan's.To her surprise,an apprentice of FangClan-maybe Ghostpaw-was on SongClan territory,poking his nose around. "What do you think you're doing?"Dawnpaw snarled. Ghostpaw's head shot up. "Remarking the border." "That's not the border!"Dawnpaw snapped hotly. "You're on SongClan territory!Get off!" "I don't have to do what a scrawny apprentice tells me,"he sneered. "I'll make you,"she snarled.Dawnpaw dropped into an attack crouch.Ghostpaw mirrored her,teeth bared. Dawnpaw's white-tipped tail lashed back and forth as she pounced.He snapped down on her tail,holding tight. Dawnpaw whisked around and clawed at his face,spattering her paw with blood.He responded by biting her ear. Furious,Dawnpaw leapt on top of him,rolling him over on his back,and tore at his fur,anger running through her veins. It was only when her jaws closed around Ghostpaw's neck that she heard a voice inside her head yell, <STOP!!> Dawnpaw stumbled back.Ghostpaw lay limp on the shore,red liquid in a pool around him. What had she done? Cautiously,she stripped her fur from between his claws.Then she shoved Ghostpaw's body in the river. Dawnpaw watched it swirl away downstream. She,Dawnpaw,daughter of Songstar,was a murderer.
