The world spun into shape and Firekit opened her eyes. "Wh...where am I?" A small yelp came from the left. "Ouch!" Now a sigh. "Stop moving around,Dawnpaw.I can't treat your wound properly!" "Sorry,Lavenderflight." Firekit shifted her amber eyes to see her sister wincing at a stinging wound on her shoulder while the medicine cat spread a poultice on it. "Stupid foxes,"her brother's voice complained. "They tore me to shreds!" She looked in the other direction to see her brother letting Oceankit spread a poultice on his ear. "Dawn...kit?"she whispered. "You're awake!"her younger sister(by three seconds)meowed. "We're apprentices now,"Almondkit explained. "My mentor's Gingerheart,Dawnpaw's Coldeye,and Oceanpaw's is Lavenderflight!" "Hey,Almondpaw,"Coldeye mewed,trotting into the medicine den, "did you visit Whiskerpelt's kits yet?" Almondpaw looked startled. "Whiskerpelt had her kits?" Oceanpaw looked uncomfortable. "Yeah.I helped Lavenderflight with the kitting." "That's great sis!"Dawnpaw exclaimed. "There you are!"Gingerheart meowed,entering. "Almondpaw,I want you to come hunt with me-if he's fit enough,that is."He looked hopefully at Lavenderflight. Firekit shoved herself up into a sitting position as Lavenderflight padded over and sniffed at Almondpaw's injuries. "Not too badly clawed up,"she pronounced. "And Oceanpaw's horsetail poultice should stay on.He's fit for hunting." Mentor and apprentice trotted out of the medicine den,tails waving. "How long have they been apprenticed?"Firekit asked,pelt prickling at the thought of her littermates moving on without her. "Just a day or so,"Lavenderflight mewed. "The questers to find Firekit just returned yesterday,and we were apprenticed 4 days ago,"Oceanpaw mewed. "So 4 days,actually." "Songstar told me to tell you that,as punishment,he's making you wait another moon to become an apprentice,"Lavenderflight meowed. Firekit choked. "What?!" The remaining cats left the den,chatting,though Dawnpaw cast a worried glance over her shoulder. Firekit turned away,furiously ignoring the sound of her sister recieving a lesson from her mentor.Just because she was a day away from her apprenticeship,Songstar had to punish her!Anger burned through her soul,attracting the attention of two very evil cats before she went to sleep
