(Unless you can make it better) ~Animate! A blink is simple and not that hard. If you really want to win, consider the hair blowing, the smile growing, or even the head turning. ~Put in a backstory! You guys are most likely better writers than I am, and I love hearing (reading?) your ideas. ~Great backgrounds are great (well, duh!) and if they are detailed, that's a large factor. However, just a simple color can draw your eye (or rather my eye) to the beauty of your character's face.
