The kit bounded up to his mother's body, heartbroken. He pressed his muzzle into her soft fur and began to weep softly. The black and white kitten lifted his head from Dove's corpse and padded away from the place where his mother had been violently killed. His paws seemed to lead him in the right path, for after he was too weak to continue traveling, he came across a patch of gorse near the clearing where WindClan made camp. He curled up in the makeshift nest and brought his gaze to look at the group of cats from the moor he had stumbled upon. He watched cats enter the clearing with the results of hunting in their jaws, allowing the Clan to share prey as the sun set. The kit wondered what it was like to be in a Clan. The ranks of the cats seemed to be easily identified from any perspective. He found himself gradually closing his eyes, deep in thought. The black cat opened his eyes and stared at the night sky, full of shining stars. As he gazed at the beauty of the night, he eventually fell asleep. The kit awoke to the sound of voices nearby. His view came across the shapes of two cats, one of them calico and the other ginger with a distinctive white tail. The ginger tabby curiously scented the air as they approached the small cat. The thick-furred calico meowed in amazement. "Look Blazetuft, there's a kit in that gorse patch." They padded closer to the black kitten. The tabby, Blazetuft, spoke suggestively. "Do you think we should take him to camp?" The other cat nodded. "Probably so. I don't think his mother is around, and I doubt he would be able to survive for very long by himself." The ginger cat seemed to agree by gripping the black kit in his jaws very delicately. The kitten yowled and struggled to be released from the clutches of the strange cat, but it was no use, for Blazetuft was much stronger than he was. The green-eyed tabby flicked his tail, motioning for the calico to follow him. They carried him to the clearing that the kit had been observing the past night. The once loud camp full of cats seemed to fall completely silent as the two cats entered with the kit. A swift pale brown she-cat bounded across the clearing to the cats that had brought the kit into WindClan's camp and spoke curiously. "Blazetuft, Patchpaw, what is all this commotion about?"
