~Chapter 6~ We'd just finished setting up camp for the night after hours of trekking through the forest, and our motley group gathered around the fire, trying to feel any semblance of the warmth emanating from it. Crinkling leaves blanket the forest floor as the onset of winter approaches, and the night has us all nearly frozen. I keep my food close, watching Ridge carefully in case he tries anything. Amora has finally set down her lute in her tent, and she lies next to me with Eliza on my other side, Thomas hugging her to preserve warmth, or so he claims. The sun has set upon the horizon, and I finally get up to try and get some sleep before we set out again tomorrow. This journey has me feeling particularly agitated... Perhaps I've been a little too standoffish. I reach my tent and begin looking through my stuff, searching for the bag of marbles that my mother gifted to me before she passed away, but they don't seem to be anywhere. I start panicking, rustling through all my stuff again, when Eliza appears at the opening to the tent. She surveys the mess with tired eyes, then looks up at me. I hadn't realized it, but in my panic I had completely tensed up. "What are you doing, Cory?" Eliza asked, looking concerned. "I think I lost my marbles," I say, looking down in defeat. "Oh well... it's time to sleep anyways, so we have the energy for tomorrow's journey." Eliza looks at me in confusion for a moment before nodding and bidding me goodnight. I take off my armor and shine my sword carefully, then pause and stare at the single stone embedded in the hilt. If I can't even keep watch over my most precious belongings, how will I manage to protect those I care about? I shake my head to clear my thoughts, then set down my sword and allow the world to fade to black. ~End~ Sorry, I know this didn't have much action.
