Littered with rusty barrels oozing toxic chemicals and oil leaks covered up with garbage bags, many of our national wildlife refuges are in danger. For years, there has been little to no oversight of private oil and gas operations on federal land - but now the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is finally proposing to change that. Support FWS’s proposal to put rules in place governing private oil and gas development on national wildlife refuges! Since oil and gas are so profitable, many places around the country divide land sales between what’s on the surface and what’s underneath. However, FWS is rarely able to afford the rights to what’s underneath wildlife refuges – meaning they are legally required to allow oil and gas companies onto national wildlife refuge lands to drill for private minerals under the surface. One-third of all national wildlife refuges have some form of development related to oil and gas. Tell FWS to protect the wildlife, habitat and water that exist on national wildlife refuges from private oil and gas organizations! Every day, more questions come up about this federal agency’s lethal actions against predators. But instead of being embarrassed by their reckless unjustified killing of wolves and other predators, the Administrator overseeing this agency has publicly proclaimed that he is proud of the lethal work the agency does! From the agency’s own records, an accounting of more than 500 wolves killed in one year alone reads like something from a bad horror movie: 64 wolves gunned down from helicopters 316 killed in foothold traps 30 killed using neck snares 37 shot from fixed wing aircraft It gets worse. Last winter, Wildlife Services, hired by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, went into a federally designated wilderness area to shoot 23 wolves … and their excuse was to artificially boost elk populations for big game hunters. If there are special areas on federal lands where wolves should be safe, it should be in congressionally designated wilderness areas - but for the hired guns from Wildlife Services, it meant nothing. NEW: Fueled by politics and hatred, Idaho is pushing ahead with its wolf-killing plan. Just this month, Idaho’s Governor, a fanatical wolf-hater, appointed members to his wolf death panel. Its job: to spend hundreds of thousands dollars for the sole purpose of slaughtering a majority of the state’s wolves.
