Jangls are born from primordial ooze--and anything even remotely gold lying around said primordial ooze. It forms its trusty drum out of mud and clay, which eventually--and inexplicably--forms into stone. Speaking of inexplicable things surrounding the Jangl, it has an affinity for crabs, especially, according to their Hero Island comrades, ones with accents that brag about their many possessions.
