Instructions

arrow keys or space to see the process! press "s" for a speedpainty thing (it just switches the costumes automatically lol) I really liked @woarel's tutorial on shading and felt a bit inspired by their nod to the Sonic franchise with Sally Acorn :3 So I decided to draw two characters featured in one of Archie's last Sonic Universe arcs (rip their Sonic the Hedgehog comics), Silver the Hedgehog (it's no use) and Gold the Tenrec (designed by Evan Stanley for the Archie Sonic universe)

Description

Tried to put some of @woarel's tips in action! 1. started with a character sketch. Btw this piece's character drawings are in the style of Tracy Yardley (bc I love it so much) so it's not exactly my style, more of a tribute. 2. Added Gold's cloak, you'll see why later :3 3. sketched sections that are going to have different colored "inks" 4. "Inking" of most of the lines...it's kinda difficult to make sure they're clean. Now I know why the comics had specific people to do the inking! 5. Removed the sketch layers that have already been lined, leaving the colored ink sketch left 6. Lined the soon-to-be colored sections on a different layer. 7. I actually only ended up coloring the ones on their outfits lol. They're complimentary to each other! Used a clipping layer btw. 8. switched background color to something closer to the actual background. So you can see what I used for reference when I was coloring! 9. Flat colors, all done on one layer. The real magics are coming soon... 10. first pass on the shading, using a reddish color (on multiply layers; for this piece all the darkening is on multiply, at least for the characters) 11. next, with blue shading.. 12. orange shading and a bit of green near where they come close to the cloak. 13. pink-purple shading, but a lot darker. 14. Went on a new layer and filled back in the light-up parts on their outfits. As Woarel said, light sources are not shaded! 15. Added soft highlights with a "soft light" layer, an orange/yellow color 16. Put in the shinies :D note their metallic cuffs on their hands and legs - smooth surfaces! 17. did shading of the eyes without effect layers, plus more shading on top of cloak 18. sketched out the background, sorry if it's hard to see! 19. Inked most of the background 20. removed sketch layer + added bit of colored ink 21. started coloring background with some textured brushes! 22. okay a lot just happened bc I did all of the coloring in a single layer... 23. Added bright spots as the sun coming between the clouds! Orange and blue are complimentary, once again. 24. Put details on the ground like texture and some water. 25. Rain rain rain~ That's what the cloak is for! 26. Water droplets added onto the characters, a bit of rain in front of them, and bam! We're done. They're caught in a pretty sun-shower.
