SUMMARY: In 18th century Britain, there is a stable owned by Prince William, a younger son of King George II whose nephew, King George III, is king. Among the horses in William's stable are Herod and Matchem, four and five year old racehorses, and Marske and Spilletta, parents of the new colt Eclipse. Eclipse starts racing when he turns five, and wins all of the races he is ever in. He befriends Herod and Matchem during his childhood and falls in love with (and eventually mates with) Sportsmistress.
