Description

This project is officially 10 years old lol. very cool to see people still getting use out of it after all this time! in scrolling, the weird | in the terrain script is actually supposed to be a + ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update 9/4/2020: Hey guys, thought I'd do another update just to cover some commonly asked/requested things and let you know about the future of this project. I'll be listing everything below, so please give it a read! Thanks! 1. Unclear/Unreadable scripts/text: The pictures of the scripts initially lost a fair amount of quality when i first uploaded them, as they were upload as bitmap images instead of vector images, creating a loss in quality as the image editor tried to compensate. I did my best back then to edit the images to make text clearer if i could, but it seems the 3.0 update has caused even more loss in quality. While some more zoomed in images are still pretty readable, a few are less clear if not completely unreadable. Unfortunately I will not be updating them, as I do not have the original images and this project is very old and outdated. 2. Weird tutorial choices: When I was making the project, I wanted to fill the screen with a grid of buttons without having any blank spots. However, I didn't have enough "useful" ideas to do so. While I probably could have just made bigger buttons, I decided to just add more instead. Things like "Loading" and "soundbooth" are very trivial and more for fun or extra flair in projects than for actual use in bigger projects. Also, I wanted to try to make every script myself, so some, such as "xy velocities" are not very well crafted, and you'd have better luck looking elsewhere for a tutorial or just using someone else's script. 3. Unclear Instructions: I've been asked multiple time about things like "what does 'Goes in terrain' mean?" or "what does this block say?" and I am aware that they are very unclear. the block text is just a side effect of the poor quality of the photos. however, the "goes in terrain" issue is completely on me. In an attempt to make each "tutorial" one picture, I simply tried to write text on things that could be modified or in situations where I put scripts for different sprites in 1 photo, such as in "Scrolling". In that one, the movement scripts for the player sprite are on the top. the "terrain" is a separate sprite that moved around based on the player's inputs. I did a poor job explaining it and that caused a lot of confusion. I know this explanation isn't very clear either, but if i'm being honest this scrolling engine is not that good, and yet again you would be better off looking somewhere else for a tutorial. 4. The tutorial didn't work: there could be 2 possible reasons for that. The first is that the script you wrote was incorrectly put together. This wouldn't be too surprising given that the images aren't too clear. Double check to make sure that your script matches the tutorial aside from anything that can be modified. Otherwise, it may be due to scratch 3.0. Some block behavior has changed a bit due to the update, and plenty of bugs have also been found, so it is very possible the script just doesn't work anymore. 5. Adding more tutorials/Making Advanced Tutorials: This project is over 9 years old. I have no intention of updating it at this point in time. However, that doesn't mean that I won't possibly make a new project in the future! That being said, I'm 21 now and am busy between work and life stuff, so I don't have nearly the time I used to back in 2014 when I was 12 (actually 11 when I made this in March lol) to make projects. Unless I make a new project, I highly recommend you look at other more recently tutorials or just look at the scripts in other people's projects to learn how to do things. Now all that aside I really would like to thank everyone who's come to see this project over the years. This has gotten way more attention than I ever expected it to. I mean, at the time of writing this, this project has gotten over 8000 views and over 400 loves and favorites each, without ever going on the frontpage! That's insane! To all of you, whether you've been on here since the day this was posted or you joined an hour ago just to find this, I wish you the best of luck with your projects and/or future endeavors outside of scratch. I might still come here from time to time to answer questions and whatnot, but as far as this project goes, I'm done with it and will not be changing it (aside from maybe adding a disclaimer when you launch it just to tell you to read this lol). Alright, that's all I've got. Thanks for reading all of this if you did! also, you can also scroll with the y axis. the x one is just more common. :D so many buttons! what will you use to create? click that Love-it Button! lets try to get top loved :D
