The red you see is adrenaline/rage and slows your enemies down, so you can react better. Slaying enemies or moving fast ups your adrenaline, if you can get it to go high enough then it will be easier to fight them. No blood. If you don't get the storyline, then you should see the older versions, but basically, Humble keeps getting killed and regenerating somewhere in the future, he has now made it to the present, originally coming from the Persian war when 300 Spartans were fighting 15,000 Persians.
