This is a dystopian novel set on a different planet where everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. One day, Todd and his dog, Manchee (whose thoughts Todd can also hear) stumble on a patch with total silence. This leads them to discover a secret so terrible that they must run for their lives. This book is so complex and sad and funny and deep and meaningful I can't even describe it right now. A must-read. For middle schoolers and up
