One of my favorite fantasy books, with awesome character development as well. This is a story about a princess (yes, a princess, I know) who, through becoming a goose girl, a kind of animal worker, discovers how to stand on her own two feet after her lady-in-waiting leads a mutiny against her on the road to a foreign land. The characters are thoughtful and smart and real, and the "magic powers" are explained in a very realistic way that is brilliant and powerful and makes sense. If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "fantastic". For middle schoolers, high schoolers, everyone.
