I'm sorry to have put this off for so long, I've been meaning to get to it, but I've been working on Mega Man. Moving on, Sonic Forces is... okay. It's not the worst Sonic game ever made. Heck, it's not even a bad game. It's just... flawed. Fist, let's take a look at the bad things and get them out of the way. For one thing, the physics are terrible. Sonic's jump is stiff, the custom hero's is floaty, and that can make simple platforming obstacles turn into really frustrating ones. Also, when you're going fast as Modern Sonic, or the Custom Hero, especially in 3D spaces, you have no control. By that I mean you can't turn. A simple solution would be to loosen up the controls so you can turn, or to add drifting, which was already in previous titles like Colors or Generations. Again, this makes easy obstacles become really tedious and frustrating. One other thing that sort of bothered me was the story. Well, not the story, more like the writing. SPOILERS: throughout the development of Forces, everyone was building it up to be a dark, serious game where Eggman practically destroyed the world and Sonic would actually be serious this time and he wasn't playing around anymore. It was building up to be this legitimately dark and serious game. It wasn't. There was barely any climax or character development, Sonic still remains as he joke cracking, egotistic self, which is fine and all, but in a game called "Sonic FORCES," that takes place in a post apocalyptic future, I was kind of expecting SOME drama. Now that the bad things are out of the way, let's talk about the good things. For one, the game looks and sounds GORGEOUS! I can say that this is the best looking Sonic game since Unleashed. It really uses the new Hedgehog Engine 2 very well. The graphics are beautiful. The music is just as good. I can safely say this is now one of my favorite soundtracks in the Sonic series, and in a series known for having amazing music, that says alot. Another thing, I know everyone has already said this but it's true, the character customization is the best thing this game has going for it. It's so fun to make your own characters and being able to play as them. I think I've played as the Custom Hero more than anyone else. One other good thing this game has, or could've had, was it's ideas. It's suppose to be like Colors and Generations, and, on surface, it is. It has the same mechanics of those games. The problem was, they made the game in a different engine, so they had to remake the whole thing from scratch. To me, they already perfected 3D Sonic with Colors and Generations, and they could've done it as well with Forces. The problem is, they didn't. In short, Sonic Forces had a lot of potential. It had some really good ideas. They just didn't execute it well. It still has some good things in it, like the graphics, music, character customization, but it's matched by the poor physics and controls. If this is what the future of the Sonic series holds, SEGA really needs to "come on, step it up!" I'd still recommend this game if you're a Sonic fan, or if you're just generally interested.
