Description

My piece for the studio, TWO DAYS AFTER IT WAS SET! RECOOOOOOORRRRRDDD!!! Ahem, sorry. This has a little historical meaning behind it. Dramatic scene of girl riding along a dirt road in the countryside on a speeding horse, looking determined as her cloak billows majestically behind her while riding past a house reduced to smoulders and an anonymous group bearing flaming torches It´s a depiction of the burnings, or ´quickfire´ in medieval Scandinavia. ´´The 11th-century Swedish king Anund Jakob (King of Sweden 1022 – c. 1050) ... was said to have been "generous in burning down men's homes".´´ Arsonists would surround the house, preventing any escape, and build up piles of firewood and kindling in the doorways. They then lit them, and the fire would spread and grow, burning everyone inside the house. Quickfire was a method used against enemies during blood-feuds. Sometimes women, servants, children and the elderly were allowed to leave. So I imagine this girl would be fleeing from her home where she would have watched at least the beginning of the slow death of her father or master, and has grabbed her cloak (it´s cold up north) and stolen the man´s horse, forever changed by that one event and hoping to start a life elsewhere, only to see that the arson is being continued across the country. Or she might just be riding and happen to witness this particular burning. Originally the fire was going to be caused by a dragon, but I can´t draw dragons so I decided to research if there was any particular reason a house would be burning in medieval times. And I found a Wiki article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arson_in_medieval_Scandinavia Here´s what might have been: https://vampire81569.deviantart.com/art/Medieval-Concept-Art-711734867 Welp, thanks for putting up with this much text. I know it´s not I full colour piece, I think I´ve stopped doing those.
