Visual Trickery to make stuff look 3d is often used within 2.5d. But people are confused by this. They believe that the tricks used to help the 2d look 3d is what 2.5d is when in fact it is not. 2.5d has to do with Spatial Relations (hence the term dimensional). It is 2.5d because the perspective view is not freely moveable in all directions like 3d. Instead it is fixed or limited viewpoints in 2d (x-axis and y-axis) with the inclusion of Depth (z-axis) (the 0.5 added to the 2).
If there is no change in depth position, then it is NOT 2.5d. It does not matter how 3d it looks, without that dimensional change, there is no 0.5 added to the 2. It remains 2d even if it's really good visual effects to make it look 3d. And 2.5d remains 2.5d without angle change. If the entire land can be turned every way, it's 3d. I'm somewhat surprised that even Wikipedia has gotten this wrong. They usually are right about most things. It's kind of sad really.
