Poor Jax X3 --------------Story---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jax stood on the outskirts of town, perched on a rickety rooftop. He had been on a peaceful night walk, when he faintly heard the crackling of flames. Jax's first instinct was to run- far, far away. But as he tried to walk away, the curiosity ate him alive. Jax scanned the area, looking across winding roads, endless houses, and flickering streetlamps. Shrugging, he hopped onto a nearby fence and up onto a roof. From there, Jax could see the hungry flames- engulfing part of the forest, outside of town, a stark contrast against the night sky. His heart clenched. This was the second time he'd seen that forest catch on fire. The glowing orange flames enraptured him, and he couldn't look away. Memories bombarded him against his will, a time he desperately wished to forget. But he could never forget. ❂~❂~❂ "Just a little faster, Sykari! We can make it!" Jax screamed above the roaring flames and cracking branches. "We just gotta make it to the plains, out of the forest! We can make it!" Sykari yelped as branches rained from the trees. Flames flickered restlessly around her, wanting to swallow anything in its path. The pair darted between unstable trees, flaming bushes, and snaking roots. The towering oaks began to thin out, giving way to more grass and plants. Suddenly, a gnarled oak snapped, falling and blocking their path. Jax quickly glanced around, but to his dismay, the flames circled around them. Sykari began to panic, eyes widening as the flames grew closer. Jax looked around the forest, but couldn't see much in the scarce moonlight. "Sykari! Jump on my back, the roots of the tree haven't gone up in flames yet!" Jax yelled, running to the tangled roots of the oak blocking their path. "Jax, how will you get over, then?" Sykari yelled, worriedly. "Don't worry about me! I'll be fine, Sykari!" Jax shot back, crouching to let her on his back. Sykari hesitated, but as another flaming branch fell from the trees, she quickly hopped on Jax's back. She jumped up onto the tree, and looked back at Jax. "Run, Sykari! Run 'till you get to the city, away from the fire! I'll meet you there!" Jax screamed, sparks flying towards him. With tears in her eyes, she ran. Jax looked at the flames swirling around him. Soon, as the flames singed bits of his fur, he cried out in agony. He might never see Sykari again. He was going to die. "I wanna live! I wanna live, for years and years! I don't wanna die, not now not now!" He wailed, clawing at the charred hunk of bark blocking his path. But he grew tired, and sank to the soft forest ground. Suddenly, a sense of calm washed over him. He stood, watching the flames grow closer, but the fear had subsided. Jax looked up to the skies, seeing the full moon shine through the branches. His head whipped back down as he saw a branch fall on the circle of flames, providing an escape route. He darted over to it, running through the forest once more. But as he continued to run, and eventually reached the edge of the forest, an unknown voice rang through his head.
