"Stormclaw!" an excited voice cried. Stormclaw turned around. His daughter Sunpaw was staring at something through the mud. "What is it, Sunpaw?" he asked. "Look! The clay here's wet! We must be near the river!" Sunpaw meowed, her eyes gleaming. Stormclaw purred. The tunnel they had been working on for moons was almost complete, and his oldest daughter had been apprenticed in time to witness it. He remembered his first day as a tunneling apprentice. He remembered thinking how amazing it was as he descended deep into the earth, not even waiting for his mentor, Stoneheart, who was later killed in a vicious battle against ShadowClan thieves. Stormclaw felt a stab of grief at the thought of his still gray form, his green eyes glazed, blood oozing from the four punctures on his throat that had caused his death to soon. "That's great!" Snailpelt, who was Sunpaw's mentor, exclaimed eagerly, shaking Stormclaw from his memory. "Why didn't Sweetpaw choose to tunnel?" Sunpaw asked, curious as always. Stormclaw knew it was a harmless question, though still he felt a pang of sadness. Why hadn't Sweetpaw chosen to become a tunneler with him? Still, he was lucky both his kits hadn't chosen to be moor-runners. Then he would have no one who would look up at him with admiring eyes as he shared his tunneling secrets. Like how to tell the difference between ThunderClan pawsteps and WindClan pawsteps by the sound of them padding overhead. Or how to make a weak and unstable ceiling safe by using clay and sticks to prop it up. Sunpaw would one day be a great tunneler, he was sure of it.
I love cats and dogs. I know I only did the cat. Does that count? Probably not :( Anyway, this is my entry.
