Sweetberry was exhausted. It had been a hard battle. Not hard like WindClan had put up a great fight, but hard because she was fighting faces she had grown up seeing as friends. She had been exiled from WindClan because she had mated Ripplestrike, a RiverClan tom. RiverClan had accepted her as a warrior. This battle was her first as a RiverClan cat, and just her luck it had been against WindClan, her birth Clan. Like it hadn't been horrible enough when she was grappling with Stonefeather, who she had long known as a friendly, humorous cat. But after Applefrost had helped her send him running across the moor, a creamy golden tabby she-cat with ice-blue eyes sprang on top of her. Suncreek. Sweetberry's sister. The cat she had loved for her whole life as a friend, a cat she could consult if she had a problem. But apparently Suncreek still hadn't forgiven her for the time she had been made deputy instead of Suncreek. She fought fiercely. Sweetberry had seen Driftstar watching her as he pinned down Larktail with one enormous paw. Not helping, just watching. Sweetberry had immediately known why he wasn't lending a paw. A test. A test to prove her loyalty to her new Clan. And Sweetberry had passed. She'd rolled over, Suncreek toppling off her. Then she slashed at her sister's face. Again and again she clawed her in different places, until Suncreek bolted was a yowl of pain. Sweetberry didn't feel any triumph, though. But she didn't feel regret, either. It was necessary, she thought as she selected a couple of minnows from the fresh-kill to eat in her nest. She padded over to the den of reeds and twigs, cleverly designed so they floated in a flood. I did what I had to do.
