Light is actually 2 waves at 90 degree angles to each other. When you pass light through a vertical polarizing filter (the red bar), the horizontal wave gets filtered out. When you pass light through a horizontal polarizing filter (blue bar), the vertical wave gets filtered out. Update 1/20/14: added shading
