Have this follow an invisible object and look towards it, so the ground will be smoother. Use a randomized list or something to save placement position and stop and allow a predetermined map to be made. Add in my 3d steps idea spawned along certain clone values. This would provide a very variable terrain and height. p.s. bottomless pits can be created by not cloning if a certain value exists. Also a time signature can be added to ensure the pit is not too wide to jump across. If too many pit values within the time are added, turns to random value that excludes the pit value. Fairly complicated so I don't know if I'll ever get to this.
