Celebrated colloquially as the Fourth of July or July 4th, Independence Day is a national holiday in the United States that honors the Second Continental Congress's approval of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, therefore establishing the United States of America. The members of the Second Continental Congress chosen by the Founding Fathers declared that the Thirteen Colonies were now united, free, and independent, and that they were no longer under (and subordinate to) King George III, the British monarch. By approving the Lee Resolution on July 2 and adopting the Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4, the Congress voted for independence. In addition to several other public and private activities honoring the history, government, and customs of the United States, Independence Day is usually celebrated with fireworks, marches, barbecues, carnivals, festivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family gatherings, political addresses, and ceremonies. The nation's day is Independence Day. Happy 4th of July to you all!
